How important is touring caravan insurance and static caravan insurance?
Insurance for touring caravans is not compulsory, however it is essential if you plan to tow a touring caravan with your car.
Insurance for static caravans is often a requirement of holiday park rules and most static caravan sites will ask owners to provide proof of caravan insurance.
Caravan insurance is an important consideration for caravan owners as it provides peace of mind that the value of your caravan is financially covered for a range of incidents including: accidental damage, fire, theft, flood, wind or storm damage.
There are two types of caravan insurance policy:
- Touring Caravan Insurance – for towed caravans, towed behind you car or tow vehicle, often called a ‘tourer caravan’, these caravans offer the freedom to travel far and wide throughout the UK and Europe.
- Static Caravan Insurance – for caravans sited on a semi-permanent basis on a caravan park or holiday park, typically serviced with electricity, water and connected to sewage/drainage.
Touring Caravan Insurance Policy
A touring caravan insurance policy should provide financial protection against loss, damage and third-party liability.
Touring caravans are mobile, usually towed on the road to and from camping sites. Touring caravans should be road worthy and in good towable condition. Drivers in the UK must have a minimum of third party insurance required for towing a touring caravan, and it is prudent to check whether your car insurance policy allows you to tow a caravan or trailer (as some don’t). It is obviously important to consider separate comprehensive insurance cover for your touring caravan. As touring caravans are towed behind a tow vehicle they are subject to the risks of the road, which include collision with other vehicles and accidents caused by side winds or incorrect loading. Many touring caravan insurance policies require touring caravans to be securely stored when they are not in use. Many touring caravan insurance providers will offer a touring caravan insurance discount if you store your caravan at ‘CaSSOA inspected and rated’ caravan storage site.
Static Caravan Insurance Policy
A static caravan insurance policy should provide financial protection against loss, damage and third-party liability.
Static caravan insurance policies will protect caravan cover for general damage, contents, decking, and where your caravan is written off, site clearance and re-siting costs.
Most holiday parks require static caravan owners to take out annual insurance cover as a condition of the park or site rules. Caravan parks usually ask static caravan owners to provide a copy of their caravan insurance policy each season. This will be held securely on file by the park owner or manager. Many inspected static caravan parks will be on the UK Static Caravan Insurance database so caravan insurers will be able to provide an accurate quote including any park discounts or group scheme discount – if they are offered.
